SEI DO KAN Dojo is a sports club located in Dundas, Sydney. Established in 2001, this dojo follows the teachings of Nakamura Taizaburo, Soke, Hanshi 10th-Dan Battodo, and is affiliated with the Australian Battodo Association Inc. The dojo was established with the aim of teaching practical and battle-proven sword techniques, with a focus on Toyama- and Nakamura Ryu Batto-do.
The curriculum at SEI DO KAN Dojo covers various aspects of Japanese swordsmanship. Students learn kata sword forms, suburi sword swinging, kumi-tachi prearranged sword partner drills, tanren weight training, batto-giri, and geiko sword partner practise, among other techniques. The goal is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the cultural and spiritual aspects of the Japanese sword arts.
Sensei Fricke, the head instructor at SEI DO KAN Dojo, incorporates both practise and theory into his classes. In addition to teaching sword techniques, he also draws on his experience as a qualified Natural Therapist to discuss health and fitness issues with his students. His expertise includes sports medicine, massage, acupuncture, Bowen therapy, and clinical hypnotherapy.
After a brief closure, the SEI DO KAN Dojo has reopened its doors at the Dundas Community Centre on Sturt St. Telopea. The dojo offers classes for both beginners (kyu grades) and advanced students (dan grades). The beginners' class runs from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, while the black-belt class is held from 8:30 to 10:00 pm.
Students are reminded to arrive on time as the premises must be vacated by 10:00 pm. Limited onsite parking and ample street parking are available for convenient access.
The classes and kyu gradings at SEI DO KAN Dojo are conducted by Ben Chow, ABA Senior-Instructor Go-dan, and Abraham Sie, ABA Branch-instructor San-dan. Black-belt dan gradings are overseen by Hans Fricke, Kyoshi 8th-dan Nakamura Ryu Battodo and Kyoshi 7th-dan Toyama Ryu Battodo. Hans Fricke, the head instructor at SEI DO KAN Dojo, is an accomplished martial artist with various achievements to his name. He was inducted into the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2010 and the World Karate Union Hall of Fame. He holds the rank of Kyoshi 8th-dan in Nakamura Ryu Battodo, Kyoshi 7th-dan in Toyama Ryu Battodo, and various other ranks and certifications in different martial arts disciplines.
