Riding for the Disabled Association of Qld Inc (Blackwater), located in Brisbane, is a sports club that provides equine-assisted programmes for children and adults living with disabilities throughout Queensland. Established in 1988, RDAQ serves as Queensland's peak body and offers leadership, professional development, resources, accreditation guidance, and administrative support to all affiliated Riding for the Disabled Centres in the state.
RDAQ comprises registered not-for-profit organisations, ranging from small centres in remote areas to larger multiservice organisations in urban regions. The club's mission is to enable individuals with disabilities and volunteers across Queensland to experience enjoyment, challenges, and achievement through participation in sporting, recreational, and therapeutic equestrian activities. These activities are designed to improve the quality of life, help individuals achieve personal goals, and develop essential life skills.
RDAQ values empowerment, inclusiveness, respect for diversity, ongoing improvement, accountability, and quality services. They recognise a 'disability' as any condition that restricts a person's mental, sensory, and/or mobility functions, which can be caused by accidents, trauma, genetics, or diseases. Disabilities can be temporary or permanent, total or partial, lifelong or acquired, visible or invisible.
The club acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which RDA services are delivered and strives to provide services in a culturally sensitive manner. RDAQ member centres, spread across Queensland, are assessed annually to ensure that their coaches, horses, and volunteers meet strict accreditation and safety requirements. These centres deliver unique equine-assisted services that aim to enhance self-esteem, confidence, skills, and joy in people with disabilities, starting from 3 years of age.
The demand for safe equine-assisted programmes is increasing as more individuals become aware of the benefits that come with spending time with horses in a secure and supportive environment. Unfortunately, not all individuals have access to such programmes, highlighting the importance of organisations like RDAQ in providing inclusive and empowering opportunities for people with disabilities.
Overall, Riding for the Disabled Association of Qld Inc (Blackwater) is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities through their equine-assisted programmes, promoting a sense of achievement, personal growth, and enjoyment in a safe and supportive environment.
