About

Riding For The Disabled Association (NSW) is a volunteer organisation based in Sydney that aims to provide equine assisted activities for individuals with disabilities, helping them develop and enhance their abilities. They offer a variety of programmes and activities tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of each participant.

One of the programmes offered by RDA (NSW) is Carriage Driving, where participants with disabilities are taught how to drive carriage horses. Specially built wheelchair loading carriages are used whenever possible, allowing both ambulant individuals and those who use wheelchairs to participate and enjoy the experience.

Another programme is Dressage, which offers registered RDANSW riders the opportunity to compete in Dressage Competitions. RDANSW encourages RDA Centres to host Protocol Days and Regional Competitions leading up to the RDANSW State Dressage Championships. This programme allows participants to showcase their skills and compete with their peers.

Mounted Games is a programme aimed at providing fun and enjoyable activities for both horse and rider. It focuses on improving coordination and confidence while engaging in interactive games and exercises.

RDA (NSW) also offers Equine-facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) and equine-facilitated learning (EFL) services through its EFMH&L and Connexions programme. This programme utilises horses as a therapeutic and learning tool, providing experiential forms of psychotherapy and learning for individuals in the local community. RDA (NSW) has developed a coach accreditation programme to ensure professional standards and safety in providing these services.

For those interested in riding, RDA (NSW) provides the opportunity to ride horses and participate in various equestrian activities. Riders receive support and guidance, with experienced individuals leading the horses and assisting throughout the sessions. As riders gain confidence and improve their skills, the level of support gradually decreases.

In order to run its programmes, RDA (NSW) relies on the support of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to lead horses, assist riders, help with activities during lessons, and contribute to fundraising events. No prior knowledge of horses is required, as training is provided on the job. RDA (NSW) welcomes anyone with a willingness to lend a hand and make a difference.

Riders, coaches, and volunteers are an integral part of the RDA (NSW) community. The coaches are responsible for the assessment of riders, lesson planning, implementation of riding sessions, and overseeing volunteers. RDA (NSW) offers training and mentorship for coaches, ensuring professionalism and quality in their services.

RDA (NSW) organises various competitions throughout the year, providing riders with the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete in a supportive and inclusive environment. Due to COVID-19, some competitions have been cancelled for 2021 to ensure the safety of participants and the community.

Riding For The Disabled Association (NSW) is dedicated to turning dreams into achievements for individuals with disabilities. With the support of volunteers, coaches, and the wider community, RDA (NSW) continues to provide opportunities for personal growth, development, and enjoyment through equine assisted activities.
