Riding For The Disabled Association (NSW) – Blue Mountains is a volunteer organisation based in Sydney, Australia. Their mission is to provide equine assisted activities for people with disabilities in order to develop and enhance their abilities. The club offers a variety of programmes and activities, including carriage driving, dressage, mounted games, and equine-facilitated psychotherapy and learning.
Carriage driving is one of the main programmes offered by RDA (NSW) – Blue Mountains. The aim is to teach people with disabilities how to drive carriage horses. Specially built wheelchair loading carriages are used whenever possible, allowing both ambulant individuals and those who use wheelchairs to participate.
For those interested in dressage, RDANSW Dressage offers registered RDANSW riders the opportunity to compete in dressage competitions. They host a video competition and encourage RDA Centres to host protocol days and regional competitions leading up to the RDANSW State Dressage Championships.
Mounted games are another activity offered by RDA (NSW) – Blue Mountains. These games are designed to be fun for both the horse and rider, while also improving coordination and confidence.
The club also provides equine-facilitated psychotherapy (EFP) and equine-facilitated learning (EFL) services through their EFMH&L and Connexions programme. RDA (NSW) has developed a coach accreditation programme to ensure professionalism and safety in offering these services to local communities.
Riding itself is an option for individuals at RDA (NSW) – Blue Mountains. They have trained volunteers who provide assistance to riders, including leading the horses and walking alongside them if needed. As riders become more confident, the level of support is gradually reduced.
RDA (NSW) – Blue Mountains relies on the support of volunteers to run their programmes and activities. They welcome individuals who want to be volunteers and don't require any prior knowledge of horses. Volunteers can assist with tasks such as leading horses, preparing riders for lessons, and helping with activities during lessons. Training is provided at the local centre.
The club also offers opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in competitions, such as dressage and carriage driving. They have experienced coaches who are responsible for assessing riders, planning and implementing riding sessions, overseeing volunteers, and maintaining records.
Please note that due to COVID-19, some competitions and events may be cancelled or postponed. It's recommended to check with the club for the most up-to-date information.
Riding For The Disabled Association (NSW) – Blue Mountains is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities through equine assisted activities.
