Richmond Shotokan Karate School, located in Melbourne, offers traditional karate training in a dedicated and supportive environment. Established in 1983 by Sensei Con Sklavounos, the school has a long-standing presence in the Richmond martial arts community.
The school boasts two dojos, Richmond and Coburg, both known for their high standard of karate and competition success. Students of all ages and skill levels are welcome to join and experience the rigorous training and commitment to excellence. Classes are held at the Richmond Dojo on Mondays and Thursdays from 5 pm to 6 pm for juniors and 6 pm to 8 pm for seniors. The Coburg Dojo offers classes Monday to Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm for juniors and 7 pm to 9 pm for seniors, with special training on Saturdays, including squad training.
The focus at Richmond Shotokan Karate School is on the development of correct technique, long low stances, strength, posture, and knowledge through constant practise. This commitment to a high standard is evident in the three components of karate training: Kihon (basics), Kata (forms), and Kumite (fighting). Students also build and develop skills through set fighting sequences, improving accuracy, hand-eye coordination, power, and speed. The training progresses to free fighting, self-defence, and competition karate.
Conditioning and fitness training are integral parts of the school's training programme, supporting the high standard of karate practised. By emphasising conditioning and fitness, students are encouraged to lead fit and healthy lives with strong minds and bodies.
Sensei Con Sklavounos is a highly experienced instructor, holding a 6th Dan/Rokudan ranking. He began his karate journey in 1975 and opened the Richmond Dojo in 1983 at the age of 16.
