The Pyrmont Heritage Boating Club (PHBC) is a sports club located in Sydney, Australia. The club focuses on preserving and promoting the heritage of boating in the area. Through various projects and partnerships, PHBC aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and find solutions to overcome threats to the earth.
One of the club's initiatives is the “Pirates of Plastic,” a group that uses boats to engage people in cleaning up plastic pollution in Sydney Harbour. Despite the overwhelming amount of plastic in the waterways, PHBC believes that small actions can lead to significant change. Through cultural adventures with the environment, the Pirates of Plastic aim to build awareness and collaborate with the community towards a difference for the oceans.
Aegir, a 23m replica 800AD Gokstadt Viking longship, is another notable project of PHBC. The club worked on its restoration and successfully obtained permission from the Sydney Fish Market to berth the ship for a month. PHBC is now seeking a permanent berth in Sydney Harbour to complete the project.
PHBC also organises events and trips to various locations, such as the Lake Macquarie Boat Festival. Members and guests travel to Toronto, located on the western shores of Lake Macquarie, to enjoy boating in one of Australia's largest coastal lakes. These trips provide an opportunity for members to appreciate the natural beauty of the area and strengthen their connexion to boating heritage.
The club actively updates its social media accounts, including a YouTube channel featuring videos of the Pirates of Plastic. PHBC encourages people to get involved and make a difference by participating in their initiatives. Donations can be made through the GIVE NOW platform, which supports the club's ongoing efforts to preserve the environment.
