Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC, also known as Tigers JAFC Auskick, is a thriving sports club located in Wollongong, Australia. The club has a rich history, dating back to 1999 when it was formed by a group of passionate individuals who wanted to bring junior Australian Rules football to the northern suburbs of Wollongong.
In its first year, the club attracted 25 players across different age groups, including Auskick, Under 10s, and Under 12s. The club's inaugural president, Alex Parsons, played a crucial role in its formation and was supported by Lisa Parsons, who took on the responsibilities of treasurer and canteen manager. John Hoyle and Steve James also joined the team, serving as secretary and registrar/ground manager, respectively. The club's first official meeting took place at Bellambi Hotel in December 1998.
Before the establishment of Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC, there was already a junior Tigers club in the Northern Suburbs of Wollongong. The Bulli-Woonona Tigers Juniors started in 1971 and quickly became one of the top junior teams in the Illawarra Junior League. Unfortunately, the club folded in 1988, but many of the players from that era went on to become notable figures in the senior team.
AFL NSW/ACT has played a significant role in the development of junior AFL in the Illawarra, including the establishment of the junior competition. The representatives from AFL NSW/ACT chaired the meetings and offered support to the clubs. Additionally, the organisation provided new jumpers to each team for the first two years of the competition, free of charge. Stan Paulson, the first AFL development officer in the region, played an instrumental role in introducing and promoting the sport.
Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC is proud to be a part of the larger Tigers family, which includes the senior team. The club has built a strong community and offers an inclusive and supportive environment for children to learn and develop their AFL skills. With dedicated volunteers and passionate coaches, Tigers JAFC Auskick continues to provide young athletes with the opportunity to engage in a healthy and active lifestyle through the sport they love.
Whether your child is new to Australian Rules football or has been playing for years, Northern Districts Tigers Junior AFC is dedicated to ensuring they have a positive experience. The club welcomes children of all skill levels and fosters a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Joining Tigers JAFC Auskick means becoming a part of a supportive and inclusive community that values teamwork, discipline, and fun.
