NEGS Equestrian Centre, located in Armidale Dumaresq Council, is a sports club with a rich history in equestrian pursuits. Established in 1973, NEGS has been a hub for horse riding enthusiasts, providing excellent facilities and opportunities for riders of all levels.
The Riding School at NEGS is where it all began. The founder, Florence Green, owned the very first horse at NEGS, named Dusty. Since then, NEGS has produced talented riders who have gone on to represent Australia in the Olympics. The focus at NEGS is not just on riding skills, but also on developing important life skills and a sense of responsibility in students.
This holistic approach ensures that students are well-prepared to excel as individuals both on and off the saddle.
NEGS Campdrafting Squad is a programme designed to foster horsemanship and athletic development. The programme helps riders make a seamless transition into the industry, and starting from 2019, there is an exciting addition of on-site bison into the camp draught programme, elevating the training experience for future athletes. NEGS campdraft coach, Gloria McCormack, is a successful competitor and professional trainer in the industry, and she works closely with students to hone their skills. Private lessons and horse schooling with Gloria are also available to interested riders.
The NEGS Polocrosse Squad is another highlight of the equestrian programme at NEGS. The club boasts an outdoor polocrosse field, allowing players to reach their full potential in this exhilarating impact sport on horseback. The squad is led by national player, Ella Elks, who has represented Queensland at a national level. NEGS polocrosse team regularly participates in weekend tournaments across the state, with dedicated coaches and staff supporting the girls throughout their journey.
To be a part of the squad, players must demonstrate commitment to training and competition schedules, as well as uphold the values of sportsmanship and correct horse management.
Both the Campdrafting Squad and Polocrosse Squad programmes at NEGS include weekly squad training during term time, as well as mentoring in horse fitness and nutrition. There are certain requirements for participating riders, including compulsory attendance at squad training and adherence to the NEGS Sport Code of Conduct. Additionally, fees for each programme must be paid upfront for the term.
