These facilities include two all-weather arenas, a cross country course, a round yard, show jumping equipment, day yards for horses, and club rooms.
The primary aim of Mountain Pony Club is to encourage young people to ride and develop a love for all kinds of sports associated with horses and riding. The club provides instruction in horse riding and horsemanship, with a strong emphasis on instilling proper care and respect for animals among its members. Additionally, the club is dedicated to promoting high ideals of sportsmanship, safety, citizenship, and loyalty, all while cultivating strength of character and self-discipline in its members.
Throughout the year, Mountain Pony Club hosts a variety of events that cater to riders of different skill levels and interests. These events include a One Day Event, Cross Country Training Day, Show Jumping Day, as well as numerous internal pony club activities. Rallies are held on the first Sunday of every month, providing members with regular opportunities to participate in club activities and develop their riding skills.
The history of Mountain Pony Club dates back to its formation in 1971 by a group of horse lovers in the Mount Barker District. The club initially held its rallies at the present location of the grounds, which were generously provided by the Stephenson Family. Over the years, the club has experienced significant growth, leading to the opening of a clubhouse in 1972 and subsequent extensions to accommodate the increasing membership. An equipment shed was also erected to house the club's training equipment.
In 1981, after a period of planning and negotiations, Mountain Pony Club purchased 14 acres of land from Mr Ted Stephenson, solidifying the club's long-term presence in the area. This purchase was followed by the acquisition of an additional 20 acres in 1989, bringing the total area of the club's grounds to 34 acres.
Joining Mountain Pony Club is a straightforward process. Potential members are required to attend one rally unmounted and complete an application form, which is then reviewed by the committee. Upon acceptance and payment of the insurance fee, the rider is allowed to attend the next rally mounted and will be assessed by the Chief Instructor to determine their skill level. From there, the rider is allocated to a training group.
Families have three months to decide if they want to become members after this initial period.
Mountain Pony Club takes pride in its rich history, its dedication to providing quality instruction, and its commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive community for equestrians in the District Council of Mount Barker.
