Miyagi Kan I.K.O Goju-Ryu Karate Do, Northmead

Welcome to Miyagi Kan, a highly respected Karate organisation located in Northmead, Sydney. Established by Hanshi George Barounis, a 9th Dan black belt, in 1976 after his training in Japan, Miyagi Kan offers karate classes for both adults and children of all ages. The aim of our training is not only to enhance self-defence skills but also to improve strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, and overall confidence and wellbeing.

Miyagi Kan is affiliated with the NSW Karate Federation (NSWKF) and the Australian Karate Federation (AKF), the official governing bodies for karate recognised by the Australian Sports Commission. This affiliation allows our students to participate in sport karate competitions sanctioned by the AKF, including the NSW State Championships and National Championships. Throughout the year, there are local, national, and international competitions held at various skill levels, and our students consistently excel in these events.

At Miyagi Kan, we offer a range of classes to cater to different skill levels and interests. Whether you want to learn karate's traditional roots, improve your health and fitness, or compete at local and international levels, we have the right class for you. Our fully qualified instructors, led by Hanshi George Barounis, have decades of experience in teaching karate. Hanshi Barounis also serves as the President of the NSW Karate Federation and has been the National Coach for the Senior Australian Karate team for over 10 years.

Karate is not only a martial art but also an excellent practise for fitness and overall wellbeing. Our dojo (training hall) provides a family-friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all members. We prioritise learning and self-development, fostering an environment where students can achieve their goals in a supportive community.

Miyagi Kan's focus is on Goju-Ryu Karate-do, with a lineage that can be traced back to Chojun Miyagi, the founder of this style, and the birthplace of karate, Okinawa. We believe in building a solid foundation in kihon (basics) that will support you throughout your karate journey, no matter your goals.
