The Kuranda Recreation Centre (KRC) originally began as a lawn bowls club and was built in 1992.
To provide sporting, social and recreational facilities for the wider Kuranda community.
The construction of the KRC in 1992 cost $350,000 and was financed from private funds. No grants were received from Government. In 1993, a 30 year lease was issued by the Mareeba Shire Council which will expire in 2023.
Two tennis courts were constructed in 1994-95 – see photos below of the construction.
The Mareeba Shire Council owns the KRC building and surrounding sports facilities (Hunter Park) which have been developed/upgraded by the KRC since 2008. Facilities include a licenced bar, commercial kitchen, spacious dining/meeting area, 4 eight-ball tables, two tennis courts (with lighting), a soccer oval, a grassed netball/volley ball court (with lighting), storage areas, gardens, and a fully lit car park and access road.
