The Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club, located in Snowy River Shire Council, is a renowned sports club with a rich history in the Australian skiing community. The club was founded in 1870, making it the oldest ski club in the country.
Originally known as just “Pioneer,” the club adopted its current name in 1929. This change was made to reflect its status as the original ski club in Australia. Although it is believed that the club existed prior to 1861, there was no concrete evidence to support this claim at the time. Therefore, the year 1870 was chosen as it was still within the living memory of members who had participated in the club's events and won trophies under the guidance of Elias Gottaas.
In 1936, the Adaminaby Ski Club was formed, and a year later, a fire destroyed the facilities used by the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club. Following the fire, the Adaminaby Ski Club proposed a merger with the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club, but ultimately, the merger did not occur. Both clubs continued to operate independently until the demise of the Adaminaby Club in 1951.
After World War II, several ski clubs emerged in Kiandra, including four privately-owned ski lodges, the Youth Hostel Club of Australia, and the Bush Walkers Ski Club. The presence of these clubs solidified Kiandra's status as the birthplace of skiing in Australia.
In 1861, two ski clubs were formed by Norwegians, with one being established in Australia and the other in Norway. The Holmenkollen Ski Museum has acknowledged this historical fact, and both clubs hold the distinction of being among the first ski clubs in the world. However, due to the variations in seasons, the Norwegian club could not hold any ski competitions until early 1862.
It is important to note that the Kiandra Snowshoe Club Inc, registered as Y16053-39, is not affiliated with the former Kiandra Show Shoe Club, Kiandra Ski Club, or the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club (1870) Ltd.
Today, the Kiandra Pioneer Ski Club continues to promote and celebrate the rich skiing history of the Kiandra District. It is a testament to the pioneering spirit of early Australian skiers and the significant role that Kiandra played in the development of skiing in the country.
