The Japanese Cultural & Martial Arts Academy, also known as Shinbukan, is a renowned sports club located in Sydney. Established in 1978 by Soke Kazuo Saito, a Karate and Ninjutsu master, the academy has been dedicated to promoting Japanese martial arts and culture for over four decades.
At Shinbukan, the focus is not just on physical training but also on the development of the mind and spirit. The dojo, or training hall, is a unique and immersive environment where students are encouraged to push their physical, mental, and spiritual limits. It is a collective learning space that fosters humility, cooperation, and self-discovery.
The academy offers a range of martial arts programmes for both kids and adults. The Kids Karate classes provide young students with the tools needed to cope with the demands of modern society. Through discipline, effort, and focus, children learn functional strength, mobility, and striking techniques. The goal of the Japanese Dojo system is to ultimately encourage autonomy and self-expression by going beyond the structured learning environment.
For adults, Shinbukan offers Karate and Ninjutsu classes. These programmes challenge individuals under pressure, testing their resolve and pushing them to their limits. The martial arts taught at the academy incorporate various disciplines such as Judo, Japanese Jujitsu, Aikido, and Kobudo (weapons), creating a well-rounded martial artist. The emphasis is not only on physicality but also on understanding and integrating the spiritual aspects of Japanese martial arts into daily life.
The community at Shinbukan is led by Soke Kazuo Saito, who migrated from Japan to Australia to spread the teachings of Karate and Ninjutsu. With over 40 years of experience, he instils traditional martial arts values and wisdom in his students. The academy's instructors have a minimum of 7 years of martial arts experience, with some having more than 30 years. Each instructor brings their own unique teaching style and expertise to the dojo, ensuring a well-rounded and enriching learning experience for all students.
Located at 151 Burns Bay Road, Lane Cove NSW 2066, Shinbukan offers a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals to embark on their martial arts journey. The academy also provides 3 free trial sessions, allowing prospective students to experience the training firsthand before making a commitment.
