Iwama Ryu Aikido Perth is a sports club located in Perth, Western Australia. They have been offering traditional Aikido training since February 2005. The club is dedicated to the Iwama Ryu style of Aikido, which was taught at the Iwama dojo by the founder, Morihei Ueshiba Sensei, and passed on by Morihiro Saito Sensei, his student of 23 years.
At Iwama Ryu Aikido Perth, members can participate in regular open-handed taijitsu classes as well as classes that incorporate the use of traditional Japanese weapons such as Aiki-jo (staff) and Aiki-ken (sword). The head instructor of the club is Peter Sceney, a highly experienced and skilled instructor. Visitors are always welcome to join the classes and learn from the knowledgeable instructors.
The club currently offers various classes throughout the week. On Saturdays, there is a weapons class held in Shenton Park, open to all participants. Sundays offer both a basic open-handed and weapons class, suitable for all levels, at the Loftus Recreation Centre. Additionally, there is a children's class for kids aged 6 to 11, although this class is currently cancelled until further notice.
Tuesday's schedule includes a weapons class and an open-handed class, and Friday's class combines open-handed and weapons training, although this class is currently suspended.
The Loftus Recreation Centre, located at Cnr Loftus and Vincent Street in Leederville, is where the club holds its classes. It is conveniently situated just 3 km from the Perth CBD and a short 10-minute walk from the Leederville train station. The centre provides the perfect training environment for participants of all ages.
Beginners are warmly welcomed at Iwama Ryu Aikido Perth. They can attend any Friday night or Sunday class and participate in two free classes. The club also offers uniforms to borrow during the classes. Those interested in joining a class should arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Membership at Iwama Ryu Aikido Perth involves completing a Membership Form and paying an annual Membership fee as well as a Training fee. The annual membership fee is $100 per year, and if joining after June 30th, the fee is reduced to $50 for the first year. There is also a fee for training classes, which is $100 per calendar month for adults and $60 per calendar month for participants aged 10 and over.
