The instructors at Itosu-Kai Central Coast Dojo are highly qualified and experienced, ensuring that classes are run safely and effectively. They understand that starting something new can be intimidating, and they strive to make all students feel comfortable and at ease. Respect is a core value in karate-do, and the instructors aim to instil this in all their students.
The development of friendships, physical fitness, and spiritual strength are essential aspects of practising Itosu-ryu karate. The Central Coast Dojo provides a supportive and welcoming community where students can grow and learn. By practising karate-do, individuals can develop the courage and compassion necessary to make a positive impact on the world.
Itosu-ryu Karatedo has a rich history that dates back to the Edo era of Japan. It was founded by Sensei Anko Itosu, who reorganised the self-defence technique of “Karate-Jitsu” to be suitable for physical education and character building. Sensei Kenwa Mabuni, a senior student of Sensei Itosu, succeeded him as the Itosu-ha 2nd Soke and also studied under Sensei Kanryo Higaonna. Sensei Mabuni went on to found Shito-ryu, combining the teachings of Itosu and Higaonna.
O'Sensei Ryusho Sakagami studied Shito-ryu under Sensei Mabuni and became the 3rd Soke of the Itosu-ha. He renamed his style to “Itosu-ryu” to distinguish it from Shito-ryu. Sensei Sadaaki Sakagami, the first son of O'Sensei Sakagami, became the 4th Itosu-ryu Soke and continues to preserve the traditional kata that have been passed down through generations.
Under the leadership of Sensei Sadaaki Sakagami, Itosu-Kai Karatedo of Japan has grown and expanded, with branches now established around the world, including the Central Coast Dojo in Australia. They are committed to upholding the principles and teachings of Itosu-ryu Karate-do and providing a supportive and enriching training environment for all.
