Obedience Obedience is the second phase of IPO and focuses on the dog’s ability to follow commands and perform tasks with precision. This phase tests the dog's ability to demonstrate control and obedience in various exercises such as heeling, retrieving, and jumping. The dog must display attentiveness, responsiveness, and impeccable obedience to the handler's commands. Obedience not only showcases the dog's ability to follow instructions but also strengthens the bond between the dog and its handler.
Protection The protection phase is where the dog's courage, instinct, and protective nature are assessed. This phase includes exercises such as a search for the helper, guarding, and transport of objects, and a courage test. The dog must demonstrate confidence, attentiveness, and control during these exercises while showing the ability to confidently confront and apprehend the helper. The protection phase tests the dog's ability to protect its handler and remain under control even in high-stress situations.
Character Assessment In addition to the three disciplines, the Gold Coast Sportdog Club also emphasises character assessment.
