The history of the Forster Turtles is intertwined with the wider winter swimming community in Australia. In 1959, representatives from seven winter swimming clubs, including Forster Turtles, came together to form the NSW Winter Swimming Association. This association aimed to organise an annual winter swimming competition where members could socialise and compete formally. Over the years, the association grew and included numerous clubs from various regions.
In 1976, the association expanded to encompass clubs from Queensland and Western Australia, leading to the establishment of the Winter Swimming Association of Australia. Today, over 5,000 swimmers regularly compete in winter swimming events between May and September, with the WSAA Championships attracting Olympians and SLSA champions.
Joining the Forster Turtles gives members the opportunity to take part in various events throughout the winter swimming season. The club's website provides information on upcoming events, records, and contact details for other clubs. The club's board members for 2023 include President Nev Barker, Vice President Lyn Chapman, Secretary Stacey Thomas, Treasurer Anne Cullen, Chief Referee Michael Ryan, and several committee members.
Forster Turtles prides itself on its rich history and ongoing commitment to winter swimming. With a diverse and passionate membership, the club welcomes individuals of all swimming abilities to join them in embracing the challenge and joy of swimming in the cooler months. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced swimmer, Forster Turtles offers a supportive and inclusive environment to help you enjoy the exhilaration of winter swimming.
