About
Formula Vee is an open-wheeler race car category based on Volkswagen parts. Established nationally almost 50 years ago, and locally in Tasmania around 45 years ago, the category is now recognised by CAMS as the official entry-level motorsport category in Australia.
The Formula Vee Tasmanian Championship takes place at both Baskerville and Symmons Plains circuits as part of the Tasmanian Super Series, with six rounds per year. Nationally Formula Vee race on almost every iconic motorsport track in Australia, including Mount Panorama, Phillip Island, Sydney Motorsport Park (Eastern Creek), Barbagallo and Mallala.
Formula Vee Racing provides the thrill of fiercely competitive motor racing at a budget cost. Permitted modifications are minimal so that greater emphasis is on driver skill rather than budget. As a result, the class is the first proving ground in motor racing and has always been a stepping stone to higher levels of motorsport.
Formula Vee has been the stepping stone for many of Australian motorsports great drivers, including John Bowe (who won the Tasmanian Formula Vee title in 1971), Larry Perkins, Jason Bargwanna and Colin Bond. To add to this, current motorsport rising stars such as Cameron Waters, Jack LeBrocq, Sam Power and Josh Burdon all raced Formula Vee’s early in their career. On the international stage, Niki Lauda, Emerson Fittipaldi and Keke Rosberg, all Formula 1 champions, raced Formula Vees in Europe or America at the beginning of their careers.
