The club has an interesting history, originally established as Gippsland Ultralight & Leisure Flyers (GULF) in 1982. Initially operating at a grazing property called 'Redcourt', located west of Bairnsdale, the club later relocated to Yarram Aerodrome. Eventually, the East Gippsland Aero Club was formed by the members of GULF, and the club's new facilities were established at Bairnsdale Airport. The club has a wide reach, with members spread from Mallacoota to Melbourne.
The primary objective of the East Gippsland Aero Club is to provide a platform for members to benefit from each other's experiences in aviation. The club aims to make flying safe and enjoyable for all through various activities and resources. They hold monthly meetings on the last Sunday morning of each month at the number 2 Hangar at Bairnsdale Airport, followed by a BBQ lunch for a nominal fee. Additionally, the club organises flying activity days and social events with other Aero Clubs, both within and outside Victoria.
