The Devonport Football Club was established as the Formby Football Club in 1881 and by 1890 it was formally constituted as the Devonport Football Club. For 120 years the Devonport Football Club (DFC) has been providing a healthy and safe sporting environment for the youth of the region.
The Club has undergone a complete transformation during the 2011 season with a new Board of Directors and administration taking over and guiding the club in an exciting new direction. The results off the ground so far have been positive with the club set to post an operating profit for the 2011 season and many people in the community re-engaging with the club and offering support. The Board is confident the hard work and strategic planning will pay dividends on the field in years to come with sustained success through the development of local talent within the region.
The Club focuses on providing an environment that is family friendly and seeks to work with other organisations in the community to improve the quality of life for people, in particular the youth of the area. The Board is focused on opening the Devonport Football Club up to the community and to increase and improve all services offered.
Furthermore, the character of the people involved at the Club is a priority for us with one of the Board's most important values being 'character first – talent second.
Many former Devonport players have gone on to become community leaders and outstanding citizens and in recent years the Devonport Football Club has produced AFL players of the calibre of Matthew Richardson, Jade, and Brady Rawlings and Grant Birchall. The Club fields Senior and Colts (Under 21) teams in the AFL Tasmania State League representing the eastern zone of the North West Coast that stretches from Port Sorell to Ulverstone municipalities. Along with these teams the club also fields Under 17 and Under 14 teams in the North West Junior Football League.
The Devonport Football Club has won thirteen topships with perhaps the most notable being its victory in the 1988 TFL state-wide competition. Devonport is an inaugural member of the current AFL Tasmanian State League formed in 2009 and played finals in the first year before overcoming huge obstacles to reach the Grand Final in 2010.
The club regularly has over 300 members a number we aim to grow significantly in years to come. The appointment of an AFL Tasmania funded full-time General Manager has also assisted the club significantly with administration and hopefully will develop football further in the club's zone.
