Dandenong Ranges Orienteering Club (DROC) is a sports club located in Melbourne, Australia. The club is dedicated to the sport of orienteering, which involves navigating through unfamiliar terrain using only a map and compass.
DROC hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including the Melbourne City Race, which takes place at Docklands. This urban event allows participants to explore iconic landmarks such as The District, New Quay, Waterfront City, Marvel Stadium, and Victoria Harbour. The course planners, Peter and Ilze Yeates, have extensive experience in planning urban races and have selected unique and unexpected control locations, adding to the excitement of the event.
The Melbourne City Race offers five line courses ranging from 3 to 10 km, catering to varying skill levels and preferences. Participants can expect multiple changes in direction and challenging route choices, some of which might involve vertical movements. To ensure fast-paced racing, Sportident controls will be in Air mode.
In addition to the Melbourne City Race, DROC also organises the Summer Shorts series, held on Sunday mornings from October 22 to November 12. These events are designed to provide a shorter, more accessible orienteering experience. The final Summer Short event will take place at Waverley Stadium, featuring concentric circles around the iconic Waverley Park footy ground. Participants can choose from three course lengths, with Course 3 specially designed for newcomers to the sport.
DROC strongly recommends using public transport to reach the event venues, as parking is limited. The club offers fantastic prizes for winners and placegetters, as well as random prizes for all pre-entrants. Online entry and payment are available, ensuring a smooth registration process.
