Cardiff Hawks Australian Football Club is a long-standing sports club based in Newcastle, established in 1968. The club has a rich history and has been competing in the AFL Hunter Central Coast Seniors, specifically representing the Cardiff Seniors.
The club's journey began in 1967 when it was formed on November 14th. In the following year, the Reserve Grade team entered the Newcastle competition and finished as runners-up by just one point. The team quickly made its mark, winning the Reserve Grade premiership in 1969. In 1970, the 1st Grade team joined the competition, and in 1972, both the 1st Grade and Reserve Grade teams competed.
Throughout the years, the Cardiff Hawks have achieved numerous milestones and successes. They were runners-up in the 1st Grade in 1974, and in 1976, they won the Reserve Grade topship. In 1978, the Maneela Oval was developed and officially opened, providing a home for the club. The Under 17 team entered the competition, and in 1979, Cardiff Hawks secured their first-ever 1st Grade topship.
The Under 17 team also claimed a premiership in the same year.
The club's success continued into the 1980s, with the 1st Grade team achieving an undefeated minor and major premiership in 1980. The Reserve Grade and Under 17 teams also won leadingships during this period. In subsequent years, the club maintained a strong presence in various age categories, with further topships and runners-up titles across different grades.
In 2006, the Cardiff Hawks faced a transition, moving the Juniors to Hillsborough Oval and the seniors to Bill Elliot Oval. Despite these changes, the club continued its success, winning multiple premierships in different age groups. The club's commitment to excellence led them to secure the Club Championship and 1st Grade Minor and Major leadingship in 2005.
Over the years, the Cardiff Hawks have established themselves as a resilient and dedicated club, known for their passionate players and loyal supporters. Their achievements and history are a testament to the hard work and talent of their teams.
