Young as three years old, and there is no upper age limit. Canberra Physical Culture Club (CPCC) is dedicated to empowering girls through fun and affordable dance classes.
CPCC offers physie, also known as Physical Culture, which is a fusion of dance and sport. The classes incorporate various dance styles such as jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, aerobic dance, and even yoga. The choreography is updated annually to provide maximum variety and enjoyment. Physie is not only a great way to increase strength, fitness, and flexibility, but also promotes coordination, brain development, and confidence in girls.
Physie is a synchronised, team-based sport that offers a social and fun environment for participants. It is a low-impact dance and aerobic activity that is suitable for all ages. The choreographed syllabus of exercise, dance, and fitness routines is set to the latest songs and music. Physie has been taught to Australian children for over a century, making it a trusted and time-tested activity.
Apart from the physical benefits, physie also helps develop important skills that assist with achievement at school. These skills include body geography, spatial awareness, concentration, sequencing, fine and gross motor skills, left/right discrimination, listening skills, memory, and teamwork. The classes promote confidence, a sense of achievement, and self-esteem in children, while ensuring they have fun along the way.
Attire for classes at CPCC is flexible. Any type of leotard can be worn, and shorts and a t-shirt are also acceptable. Official club leotards are preferred for participants in competitions, which can be ordered through the club. The club also provides a clothing pool with pre-loved leotards of different sizes and colours for practise and local competitions.
The cost of joining CPCC includes an annual registration fee of $99 and class costs depending on the age group. Preschoolers pay $5 per class if paying by term, while children aged 5–12 years pay $8, and those aged 13 and up pay $10. Weekly payment arrangements can be made with an additional cost. There is a family annual club levy of $20, and a family discount is available.
New members can enjoy their first two lessons for free.
CPCC has a rich history of over 30 years in Canberra. The teachers, Maree Wilson and Helen Wilson, have a lifelong association with Physical Culture and bring their expertise and passion to the club. Classes are held in Wanniassa and Kambah on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons. CPCC students have the opportunity to participate in competitions at various levels throughout the year, starting from club competitions to interclub, regional, and national competitions.
Canberra Physical Culture Club is committed to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where girls can develop their physical abilities, build confidence, and form lifelong friendships.
