Canberra Cockatoos Orienteering is a prominent sports club in Canberra, representing the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in the National Orienteering League, which is the leading orienteering competition in Australia. The club competes at the highest level of competition and aims to promote orienteering in the ACT region.
The National Orienteering League is a teams' competition, with each state fielding teams of at least three men and three women. The competition consists of a series of rounds spread throughout the year, similar to the format of the Tour de France. Points are awarded based on the placings of team members in each stage of the National Series, with additional points awarded for relay races.
Canberra Cockatoos is one of the seven teams in the competition, alongside NSW Stingers, Queensland Cyclones, Southern Arrows, Tassie Foresters, VIC Vikings, and the Western Nomads. The club welcomes all orienteers and regularly holds training activities, orienteering sessions, running sessions, and training camps for anyone to attend.
However, in order to be eligible for support from the Canberra Cockatoos in terms of funding and uniforms, athletes must meet certain minimum standards and show commitment to elite orienteering. These standards can be demonstrated through performances at interstate National Orienteering League races. Athletes should have scored at least 6 points (equivalent to placing in the top 20) in non-OACT races in the previous 12 months. Exceptions may be made for athletes transitioning between age categories, returning from injury, or having work/study commitments or living overseas.
Additionally, all members of the Canberra Cockatoos are expected to assist in organising training sessions and events when required. Aspiring athletes who meet the eligibility criteria and are interested in joining the club should contact the Coach or Manager directly.
The club also keeps its members and followers updated with the latest news and developments through its social media platforms. The Canberra Cockatoos have had the support of the ACT Government, and their achievements and activities are regularly highlighted on their social media pages.
With its commitment to elite orienteering and promoting the sport in the ACT, Canberra Cockatoos Orienteering is a club that provides opportunities for athletes to excel and represents the region at the highest level of competition in Australia.
