It all began at the turn of the century when the lads of St John's choir decided to form a Rugby Union team and compete in social matches against teams from the neighbouring towns of Narellan, Campbelltown, Picton and several villages in the Burragorang Valley. Among the St John's boys were Jackie Smith, Lews Nixon, Les “Square” Stackeys, Ben Broadman, Jack Whitty (the town schoolmaster) the Taplin brothers, Trevis and Toby. In 1910 it turned to the faster, more exciting game of Rugby League.
