About
Roller Derby is an American-invented contact sport played on quad rollerskates. It dates back to the 1930s but became most popular around the 60s – 70s as a spectator sport. Since 2003, Roller Derby has been experiencing a world-wide revival with leagues popping up all over Australia and the rest of the globe!
The game is based on formation speed roller skating around a flat oval track by two teams of five women. Each team consists of three Blockers, one Pivot and one Jammer. Points are scored when the designated scoring player (the jammer) of each given team laps the members in the ‘pack’ of the opposing team while the Pivots lead the pack and the Blockers do whatever it takes (using their shoulders, hips, and booty) to stop the opposing players from passing and whipping their jammer through to victory.
Roller Derby is a very rewarding and empowering sport. It’s fun, athletic, and a great way to meet like-minded people!
Bunbury Roller Derby Inc. (BRD) formed in late 2009 and in 2013 are now hitting their second season!
