Many of the members have had a personal experience with cancer, while others are friends, families, or supporters of the cause. All the necessary equipment is provided, and participants are taught how to paddle. The club recommends wearing comfortable clothing, bringing a drink, hat, and sunscreen. The first three paddle sessions are free with no commitment.

If competition is more your style, Brave Hearts has a racing team that competes across Victoria during summer. The racing teams train twice a week during summer, focusing on improving personal fitness and paddling technique. The club attends one regatta per month, mainly in Melbourne or country Victoria.
