Blue Sparks Orienteering ACT is a sports club based in Canberra, Australia. The club is known for its Blue Sparks Programme, which serves as an entry point for young orienteers into the sport. The programme has been running for approximately 10 years and has been highly successful in introducing beginners to orienteering.
The Blue Sparks Programme consists of the Map Mates Programme, which is a four-week adventure series designed for children aged 7 to 13. The programme is held twice a year, in May on Saturday mornings and in October/November on Wednesday evenings, in conjunction with the Metro Series and the Twilight Series. During the programme, teams of 2 to 4 children navigate around a safe and easy orienteering course. Parents are also welcome to participate in the programme.
To ensure the smooth running of the Blue Sparks Programme, Blue Sparks & Map Mates Coordinator volunteers are sought. These coordinators will manage and deliver the 2019 Twilight Series Map Mates Programme. In the past, a small group of volunteers, such as a couple of families, have shared the responsibilities of running the programme.
If you are interested in becoming a Blue Sparks & Map Mates Coordinator, nominations can be sent to the OACT Office by Monday, 29th July. For more information on what is involved in the role, you can contact the OACT Office, and they will put you in touch with members who have previously been involved in managing the programme.
