Welcome to Blackburn Karate Club, a premier sports club in Melbourne that specialises in the martial art of karate. With over twenty-four years of experience, we are proud to provide a professional training environment that ensures the safety and well-being of all our members. Our state-of-the-art facility features fully-matted flooring, providing a permanent safety feature for our members during training sessions.
At Blackburn Karate, we are committed to delivering the highest standard of teaching. Our internationally recognised instructors have undergone rigorous assessment and hold government accreditation. Led by the esteemed Richard Callaghan, a two-time KOI world cup champion and 6th Dan blackbelt, our instructors possess the expertise and knowledge to guide students towards their personal best.
We prioritise the safety of children at our club. All our instructors hold First Aid qualifications and Working With Children approvals, ensuring a safe environment for children to learn and train. Our club also maintains strong relationships and participates in training events with the Australian Karate Federation and Kobe Osaka International, allowing our members access to a broader karate community.
Blackburn Karate Club offers a range of programmes to cater to different age groups and skill levels. Our Little Dragons programme is designed for children aged 5-8, focusing on fun, fitness, and learning to stay focused. The Young Warriors programme is tailored for children aged 9-15, introducing them to the physical skills of karate while instilling self-control and a proper attitude. For adults aged 16 and above, we offer Adult Karate classes, suitable for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students.
We also provide fitness classes to help improve mental and physical well-being.
Karate is a form of unarmed combat, with its roots in Okinawa, Japan. At Blackburn Karate Club, we proudly teach the Shukokai style of karate, which is known for its combat effectiveness. Developed by Chojiro Tani Sensei, a student of Kenwa Mabuni, Shukokai karate has become one of the most popular styles practised worldwide.
Chief Instructor Sensei Richard Callaghan, a 6th Dan black belt, is the founder of Blackburn Karate Club. With his extensive teaching experience and world-class knowledge, Sensei Richard takes pride in passing on his expertise to our students, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all.
