The roots of Taekwondo can be traced back to the Silla Dynasty in Korea approximately 1300 years ago. It initially evolved as an art of unarmed combat practised by monks. The practise of Tae-Kyon, as it was called then, gained popularity, and a group of elite youths known as Hwa Rang Do dedicated themselves to its practise. With their dedication and moral principles, they contributed to the unification of the three kingdoms of Silla, Koguryo, and Baekebae.
Over the years, Tae-Kyon faced setbacks and was even forbidden during the Japanese occupation. It was only after liberation that the practise of Tae-Kyon, now popularly known as Taekwondo, was revived, and it has since spread worldwide.
