Australian Lifesaving Academy - NT

OverviewAboutContact

About

The Australian Lifesaving Academy – NT is a volunteer, not-for-profit community service organisation that serves as the peak agency for coastal safety in the Northern Territory. While surf lifesaving activities have been a part of Australian culture for over a century, they have been present in the NT since 1971 when the first club, Gove Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club, opened in Nhulunbuy.

The academy believes in making a positive contribution on and off the beach. They aim to create a safe environment by patrolling the beaches, educating the public, and providing training programmes. The academy is dedicated to protecting and saving lives, promoting a healthier lifestyle, and supporting community and government policies such as safer communities, physical activity, youth development, training and education, and family.

As the largest volunteer movement of its kind in Australia, the academy relies solely on community donations, fundraising, and corporate sponsorship to operate. Surf Life Saving NT was formed in 1988 and incorporated in 1991. It consists of three affiliated clubs: Darwin Surf Life Saving Club at Casuarina Beach, Gove Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club at Town Beach, and Mindil Beach Surf Life Saving Club. These clubs have a combined membership of around 500 active lifesavers who dedicate their time to keeping the beach community safe.

The academy's headquarters are located in Coconut Grove and houses the Australian Lifesaving Academy and the Australian Lifeguard Service. The academy offers accredited lifesaving and first aid training, customised and programmed to meet the diverse needs of their clients. They also provide lifeguard services and first aid assistance at various aquatic venues and events in Darwin.

The Australian Lifesaving Academy – NT is committed to their mission of saving lives and creating a safer community. Whether you're a local or a newcomer to the Territory, joining the academy offers the opportunity to learn valuable lifesaving skills, contribute to the community, and be a part of a rich history and future in lifesaving.
