12 Quays Goju-Ryu Karate Dojo, located in Woodchurch, is a renowned martial arts school dedicated to teaching traditional Okinawan Goju-ryu karate. Founded in 1995 by Sensei Steve Hallam, the club initially operated from the Wallasey Martial Arts Centre before relocating to its current location at the 12 Quays in 2001. Due to its success, the club expanded to a secondary site in Woodchurch on the 1st of February 2006.
Sensei Steve Hallam started his karate training in Shotokan in 1974 before transitioning to Goju-ryu in 1981. In November 2015, he was awarded his 7th Dan (Nanadan) by Morio Higaonna Sensei, the highest authority in the Goju-ryu world today. With a focus on discipline, etiquette, and hard work, the training at 12 Quays Goju-Ryu Karate Dojo is geared towards effective self-defence, without emphasising any sporting aspect.
A typical lesson at the dojo begins with a traditional warm-up called Junbi Undo. Following the warm-up, students receive instruction in various elements such as Kihon (basic techniques), kata and bunkai (patterns and applications), kakie (pushing hands), and kumite (sparring). It is important to note that each lesson is unique and tailored to the needs of the students.
12 Quays Goju-Ryu Karate Dojo is affiliated with the International Okinawan Goju-ryu Karate Do Federation (IOGKF) and the English Goju-ryu Karate Association (EGKA). The club conducts gradings up to 1st Kyu, which are administered by the club instructors. Black belt gradings, on the other hand, are overseen by Ernie Molyneux Sensei at the annual Gasukus held in Bournemouth and Liverpool.
In addition to adult classes, the dojo offers dedicated junior classes. These sessions are specifically designed to cater to the needs and abilities of younger students. The club values its junior members and dedicates a section of their website to showcase their achievements.
At 12 Quays Goju-Ryu Karate Dojo, the importance of kata is emphasised. Kata, a sequence of prearranged movements, plays a vital role in Goju-ryu karate. It teaches students correct movements and helps them understand individual techniques. One of the key katas practised at the dojo is Sanchin, which translates to “Three Battles/Conflicts”.
Sanchin is considered one of the most valuable training exercises in Goju-ryu and can be found in several Chinese martial arts styles.
