The University of the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union Club, also known as USC Rugby, is a prominent sports club located in Sunshine Coast, Australia. With a strong focus on nurturing the running game and fostering a vibrant club and community culture, USC Rugby stands out as the preferred choice for rugby enthusiasts in the area.
The club offers a range of teams for both men and women, including three Senior Men's Grades, one Women's team, one Men's Colts team, and 11 junior sides from U14 to U6. These teams compete in the highly competitive Sunshine Coast District Rugby Union competition, drawing players not only from the university but also from across the coast.
Success has been a hallmark of USC Rugby, with six A-grade leadingships in the men's category and four in the women's category in its relatively short 25-year history. The club takes pride in its strong network of business and community support, adding to the overall integrity and spirit of the team.
Women's rugby has been steadily growing in strength with a competitive six-team competition. The season includes a 12-a-side competition in the first half and a 7s competition in the second half of the year. This provides ample opportunity for female players to hone their skills and showcase their talent on the field.
Junior rugby holds a special place at USC Rugby, with 11 junior sides catering to children ranging from Under 17s to Under 6s. The club places a significant emphasis on being a family-focused organisation, hosting family nights every Thursday during the season. These evenings offer opportunities for families to enjoy dinner and have the bar open while the younger players train.
To further support player development, USC Rugby runs a summer fitness programme known as the USC summer rugby academy. Aimed at players aged between U11 to U18, the academy focuses on skill development, skill education, and overall fitness. It is overseen by a team of experienced coaches and current senior players, running from November to March.
The club takes pride in its contribution to representative players, with several Stingray rep players having emerged from USC Rugby. In 2018, a player from the club even made it to the Queensland Women's team, demonstrating the high calibre of talent nurtured within the club.
USC Rugby also encourages its young players to explore refereeing pathways through the Sunshine Coast Refereeing programme. This unique initiative allows young referees to earn money by refereeing games in younger age groups. The more games they officiate, the more they can earn, promoting both player development and a deeper understanding of the sport.
Founded in 1997, just one year after the opening of the University of the Sunshine Coast, USC Rugby has quickly established itself as a dynamic and innovative club. Unlike traditional clubs, USC Rugby operates as one united entity, emphasising inclusivity and unity among players of all ages and skill levels. This philosophy is evident on and off the field, with comprehensive training sessions that involve all players and a social calendar that sets the club apart in the district.
The USC Rugby Club aims to elevate its facilities and player development by raising $50,000 through a fundraising page on the Australian Sports Foundation. Contributions from individuals can make a significant impact, whether through one-off donations or recurring contributions. Every dollar counts in helping the club achieve its goal of becoming the number one rugby facility in the region.
The USC Rugby Club is located at the University of the Sunshine Coast's Sippy Downs Campus, conveniently situated just a 15-minute drive from the renowned beaches of Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, and Kawana. The campus is easily accessible via the Bruce Highway, the national highway of Australia, connecting the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. Improved public transport options further facilitate travel to and from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane.
As a community-focused organisation, USC Rugby is grateful for the support of its associate sponsors, barbarian sponsors, and in-kind sponsors. Their contributions play a crucial role in the club's success and ability to provide exceptional experiences for players and supporters alike.
