About
***************WHAT DO WE DO?
The Bay Open Water Swimmers is a “swimming at your own risk” group. We meet up around Port Phillip Bay and various other locations to swim together. We are not a competitive entity. The idea is to swim close together.
It’s not a race. A course briefing occurs pre-swim & we always aim to be in the water @ the scheduled swim start time.
****************WHO IS THIS GROUP FOR?
This group is for people who want to swim and socialise together for fun, exercise, and to enjoy the considerable beauty of Port Phillip Bay from the perspective of being in the water. It is not specially designed for racing or for people who need to learn open water swimming techniques.
It is suitable for people who are strong and confident swimmers in the pool and who want to swim in the open water. There are risks involved in open water swimming and to maximise safety and enjoyment for yourself and other participants you should be: >> a strong and confident swimmer (i. e. can do 2 kilometres easily within 45 mins in the pool); >> physically fit and engaging regularly (every week) in some form of vigorous exercise; >> confident swimming freestyle (breaststroke is not usually a strong enough stroke to get through a swell); >>swimming regularly either in the pool or in open water; >>able to swim back to shore by yourself if you decide that you are not confident to continue with the group.
