At Roxby Downs Shotokan Karate Club, the importance of Dojo etiquette is emphasised. The word “dojo” translates to “Place of the way” or “Training room” in Japanese. The club strives to uphold Japanese customs and follows the traditional Shotokan code of conduct known as the “Dojo Kun. ” This code includes principles such as seeking perfection of character, being faithful, endeavouring, respecting others, and refraining from violent behaviour.
The club maintains general guidelines for dojo etiquette to ensure the safety and respect of all members. These guidelines include keeping the karate gi clean, trimming nails, and removing jewellery that can cause harm. Instructors with a 2nd Dan black belt or above should be addressed as “Sensei,” while 1st Dan Instructors and Class leaders should be addressed as “Sempai. ” When entering the Dojo, all members should bow and say “Oss” as a sign of respect.
It is important to be humble, attentive, and obedient to the instructor's instructions.
Punctuality and commitment are also encouraged at the club. Latecomers are expected to kneel at the side of the training floor until allowed to join the class. Members are advised to arrive early to mentally prepare for the session and should notify the instructors in advance if they are unable to attend a class. This ensures a smooth and uninterrupted training environment.
The club follows the grading syllabus set by the Shotokan Karate International Australia (SKIA) to ensure proper progression and skill development. Regular gradings are conducted to assess the members' proficiency and provide opportunities for advancement.
Overall, Roxby Downs Shotokan Karate Club provides a welcoming and disciplined environment for individuals of all skill levels to learn and practise the art of Shotokan Karate.
