About
We started training in March 2010 under the name of JKF Goju Kai Karate Australia, teaching the oldest style of Karate 'Goju Ryu'. In 2015 we odopted the name of 'Karate Academy' used by our Shihan - Glenn Stephenson (Head Instructor) of Goju Ryu Karate do Seiwakai in Australia.
The Goju Ryu style dates back to the 1880s, originating from Okinawa. Many years ago Japanese Chojun Miyagi studied Shoreiryu Karate in Okinawa, and from this Karate style he developed the style of GOJU RYU Karate, returning to Japan to teach it. From this beginning Goju Ryu Karate has developed into the most popular throughout the world, where it has now more than 3,000,000 students.
While Goju Ryu Karate naturally includes many of the basic movements of other fighting arts, it is unique in some of its aspects, particularly in the basic Katas, or movements which must be learnt thoroughly to understand and successfully practise this style.
These begin simple and, as the student progresses through the various grades of the course, so he or she learns the more complicated Katas that together form an important part of Goju Ryu Karate.
We aim to provide quality training through limiting class sizes to give individualised instruction, providing training notes and giving access to train with a variety of Karate Masters during regular seminars. Alan Wilkes – Sensei has been training since 1984 and receives his training from Glen Stephenson - Shihan.
