Helensburgh-Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club, formed on 11 February 1908, is ranked among the top 10 oldest surf life-saving clubs in the world. Situated in Wollongong City Council, it patrols the picturesque Stanwell Park Beach, the northernmost beach on the Illawarra Coast. A popular spot for hang-gliding, the beach is complemented by the majestic Bald Hill at its northern end. The club, despite being located in Stanwell Park, maintains strong ties with the surrounding suburbs of Helensburgh, Stanwell Tops, and Otford.
The club draws members not only from the local area but also from various regions, including Engadine, Heathcote, Waterfall, Sutherland Shire, Wollondilly Shire, inner Sydney Suburbs, and up and down the coast. With approximately 100 active patrolling members, 180 junior “nippers” members, and the remaining members being associates, the club is a prominent force in life-saving, both locally and nationwide. Awards and honours have been bestowed upon the club, including the titles of “Surf Life Saving Illawarra Patrolling Club of the Year” for the 2021/22 season and “Surf Life Saving NSW Club of the Year” and “Surf Life Saving Illawarra Club of the Year” for the 2020/2021 season.
Members of the club actively participate in life-saving competitions, training, and administration at various levels. They have produced winners of prestigious awards such as “Illawarra Life Saver of the Year” and “Illawarra Volunteer of the Year,” showcasing their dedication to life-saving efforts. The club takes pride in its strong community bonds and its commitment to providing a safe and vibrant beach environment for all.
