The Australian Sumo Federation, founded in 1992, has been active in international amateur sumo and a wide range of sporting and cultural activities ever since. ASF athletes have participated in multiple World Sumo Championships along with the 2005, 2009 and 2013 World Games and the 2010 and 2013 World Combat Games.
Annually the ASF performs a demonstration of sumo at the Sakura Matsuri in the Japanese Garden in Cowra. Demonstrations are also held in the Dubbo Japanese garden, at cultural and multicultural festivals, schools and any other event where we can make a positive contribution to the community.
Several major competitions are held each year. Nationally, the Australian National Sumo Championships is our big event, whilst internationally, the Oceania Sumo Championships helps us determine our best possible team to send to major international events such as the World Championships and World Games.
There are active ASF clubs in Sydney and the Gold Coast, as well as ASF affiliated training groups in Perth, Canberra, Country NSW and Northern Tasmania. New members are welcome to contact the ASF for help in finding a suitable training location.
